Love is in the air! (and my stomach)

I had never made those fancy sugar cookies with the royal icing before, so I thought Valentines was a great excuse to make them! My friend Alison came over and we did them together. Very fun! They turned out AMAZING! Friends are coming for a hangout tonight and little do they know that they're coming to an unofficial Valentines party, thanks to these amazing cookies!

The sugar cookie recipe is from the book  Betty Crocker Baking Basics. We just omitted the almond extract.

1 1/2 cups icing sugar
1 cup butter or margarine, room temperature
1 tsp vanilla
1 large egg
2 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cream of tartar

Beat icing sugar, butter, vanilla, and egg with a mixer. Add dry ingredients and stir until just mixed.
Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours
375 degrees

Roll out and cut into shapes

Bake on a cookie sheet for 6-8 minutes or until the edges are brown. Cool on a cookie sheet. Let pans cool 10 minutes between batches.

The royal icing recipe is from Annie's Eats blog. She also has a tutorial on royal icing here, and her own sugar cookie recipe here. It's pretty similar to the one we made :)
